Lock C-5, Schuylerville, NY

Precast concrete lock chamber walls and precast sidewalks were installed at Lock C-5 in Schuylerville, NY to completely rehabilitate the existing facility. The lock, which measures 964 ft long by 45 ft wide, has a vertical drop of 19 ft. A total of 209 wall panels, including ladder, line, cable, and sidewalk panels, were installed totaling 29,000 sf. The concept of precasting lock chamber walls was initiated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, at the Federal Lock and Dam on the Hudson River in Troy, NY, in the mid-90’s. The precast concrete concept for lock chamber wall rehabilitation has been used successfully on over a dozen projects.

Deteriorated lock chamber wall surfaces were removed and replaced with high performance precast concrete panels. Anchor rods in the new panels and in the existing monolith were locked together with 7 in. of infill concrete. The new panels acted as stay-in-place forms for the infill concrete as well as a long-lasting cladding for the lock chamber. The project was completed in the 2001 and 2002 winter months while the canal was closed for the season.
