Washington Dulles International, Washington, D.C.

This project at Washington Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., demonstrated that Super-Slab® could be used for overnight replacement of active taxiway pavement. A 50’ x 50’ area on Taxiway Bravo was replaced in two nights with (8) 25’ x 12.5’ x 13” thick precast concrete Super-Slab® sections. A 25’ x 40’ area on Taxiway Yankee was replaced with (4) 20’ x 12.5” x 13” thick sections in one night. The entire replacement process for Taxiway Yankee was completed in 8.5 hours.

To match the surface of the adjacent pavement, the precast concrete Super-Slabs® were intentionally warped. Before the slabs were placed, the subgrade was graded to the required three-dimensional surface to match the slabs. The precisely graded subbase allowed the taxiways to be opened to aircraft traffic on ungrouted slabs. Grouting was completed during two subsequent evening closures.
